    Default Jailbreaking Essentials

Jailbreaking the iPad is very simple. After it's jailbroken, it's making sure you install the right things!

    To Jailbreak:
Use a program called Spirit (available for Mac and PC). This is a very very simple process. Plug your iPad in, press "Jailbreak" and let it happen!

    Post Jailbreak:
    1. Connect to WiFi
    2. Go into Settings<General<Auto-Lock< and change it to Never
    3. Run Cydia for the first time and set it up as a "Graphical User Only"
    4. Make sure you select "Complete Upgrade" don't skip out and just do the "Essentials"
    5. After Cydia closes relaunch it
    6. Install the following things:
    :OpenSSH
    :WinterBoard

Believe it or not, those are really the only "essential things".

Here are some things to install that I like to have:
-SpringJumps or CategoriesSB (folders for your iPad - built right into the springboard)

-StatusNotifier (Status notifications in the status bar)

-SBSettings (a pull down menu from the status bar, providing quick access to settings/toggles [ie, wifi, 3g, bluetooth, brightness, processes...])

-Backgrounder (run apps in the background)

-Circuitous (switch between your running apps)

-Activator (assign shortcuts to do customizable things)

Note:When using Cydia or Rock to install things, make sure you pay attention to it's instructions and just hit the button at the end of each process. Some require Reboots, Resprings, and some require nothing at all!

you SHOULDNT be using rock people.. lol even the jailbreak developers are saying you shouldnt use rock. cydia is perfect for whatever you need in the jailbreak community.

did you mean in general, or iPad specific?
Rock is very useful for backing up your installs, even from Cydia. Saves a ton of time when re-installing everything. I have been using it since it came out (you could even jailbreak with it at first, and it wasnt a bad jailbreak, from the computer version). I used it for my day to day stuff since it was so much faster. I used Cydia still, but to just check up on new releases i would use Rock. Never had a problem with it (it used slightly more memory than Cydia did, which could be a slight issue on my 3G).

ima have to roll with Pwnapple on this one ............. Lots of peeps swear by Rock and its easyness to reinstall there apps but all of the Dev's I speak with and all the fanboys i know have said to not use Rock.......... heck it wasnt long ago they had that bug that was keeping a file stored on your iDevice that was in excess of 8GB's according to certain reports - that alone almost caused a major meltdown for people.......... When i checked mine (when i did use rock) i have a 2GB file myself ........... figured i would just take the long road when restoring my apps from there on out........

The people we trust say dont use Rock ............. so i dont
like i said, some people swear by it but from my experience and the people i have delt with in the past all say NO

Users have a a choice, Rock or Cydia. Yes Cydia has been around longer and in some cases may be more reliable. However I have personally experienced some issues with sources and updating where Rock has been fine. Rock is easier to use visually then Cydia and also prettier to look at. Rock gives you the benefit of browsing through more downloads while you are installing, it automatically queues it up.

I personally have had 0 problems with Rock, maybe it takes a little more mem but whatever, i dont know what issues you guys are actually having. I go back and forth between the two, but more often then not Cydia messes up and can't connect to a host or update a source, so I jump over to Rock and it works flawlessly.

yep Apple][Coder, that has been my expirence with it. I have actually had to restore twice because of cydia in the past, and it has broken several more times on top of that. The worst issue i have had with Rock is that sometimes when trying to see view a screen shot it would show an invisible page (could see my springboard).
The issue with Rock filling up the memory, that was due to a bad package from one of the sources, it caused an error log by Rock to write it over and over (thousands of times a second) and it filled up the device. It has been fixed.
On using more memory than Cydia, it didnt always, but it usually @ 2-3Mb, which was enough sometimes on my overtweaked, maxed out old 3G to cause it to crash. SuperCharged actually fixed that (although i couldnt keep SC more than a week due to lag).

curiousity.. is there an "online" jailbreak similar to the one at jailbreakme.com for the iphones?
was in a PC world the other day looking at the ipad which was happily left on the store's locked wifi, but allowed you access to anything, thought it'd be a laugh to jailbreak it for them lol
