    Default iOS 5 and optimization

I know that the png optimization for winterboard can help with older themes, but is it anything that would be recommended to run on new themes and on ios5?

I don't think it will hurt, if that what you are asking. Basically what happens is "optimization" translates PNGs into Apples format for faster loading by adding data to PNG's header file.

Makes sense. However, when I update a theme to a new version the optimization gets undone doesn't it? Feels like wasted work.

Well, it's not like it takes a lot of resources or time to optimize images, you know? At the end, I think it's worth it. This is especially good for themes that don't have their images optimized. Makes your phone load different parts of UI faster.

    I think it's a great feature

Same here, I always optimize my themes.
